Happy Earth Day!

Not that we can’t do green things every day, but what a wonderful excuse to learn about a new way to live more sustainably!green-worm-ed-pic

And while we’re on the topic, do you ever want to learn more about how worms actually eat our trash? Or how some people use funky wheat bran to pickle their leftovers? Do you wake up in a cold sweat with thoughts of 7th grade, trying to recall the difference between aerobic and anaerobic processes??

Then consider inviting the green wormers out to your school or community event for a presentation or workshop. Find out more by clicking on the Education Info Sheet on the right hand side of this page!

Rev up your compost pile….

….with happy bacteria!

I am convinced that the weather is really going to warm up this week and actually stay that way. And more tolerable weather means dealing with a (sometimes) intolerable outdoor compost pile. One that has likely been stagnant all winter, am I right?

bokashi!A simple solution to an idle pile is to add some bokashi–or femented wheat bran–to it. Our bokashi is loaded with beneficial bacteria—the kind that will “jump start” your compost pile and attract all kinds of earth worms. More worms in your pile means speedier composting!

Our bokashi can be directly added to your outdoor compost pile, or first used to “pickle” some food scraps and then added to the pile. This additional step increases the benefit. Check out this video to learn more.

Hope to see you this Saturday at City Market!

Welcome Spring!!

Well it may not be official, but boy are we excited about the warmer weather and longer hours of light in the evening! Our worms may not be so happy about the light (they tend to avoid it), but the increase in temperature as encouraged them to be more active—-the amount of food and paper scraps they consume has really picked up the last few days.

This season we plan to continue our presence at the City Market and other community events. We’d also like to respond to more requests for educational presentations related to composting with worms. So be sure to check our schedule as we add more events over the next couple weeks.

And to get the season started off right, come on out to Green Drinks KC this Thursday, March 19th at Californo’s in Westport. Green Drinks provides a monthly forum for like-minded green folks to network and learn about innovative green solutions. This month’s meet up will include a presentation by Missouri Organic which will cover composting on a large scale. Eric from the green worm will then discuss composting with worms on a household scale. Hope to see you there!

Gearing up for Fall!

Fall is around the corner and we are performing operational maintenace this coming weekend (Aug 16th).  The lovely event includes extensive cleaning, moving our worm tubs into a new location, taking care of our red wigglers (rest day) and website management.  We are very excited about our upcoming schedule with the Green Fest at the Uptown Theater on Aug 23rd!  Sarah and I will miss our favorite spot on Saturdays, the KC City Market, however we intend to be back before long.  Thank you to all those who have purchased a worm kit and have approached your waste in a fun new way.  Happy Worming.

A Good (and hot!) Day at the Little Green Festival

Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth at the second annual Little Green Festival.

We had a great time meeting some of the 115 vendors at the festival.  And it was fantastic to hang out with all the folks who turned out despite the death-defying heat (Douglas County’s heat index was 108 degrees!).

The Lawrence Journal World & News came by and chatted with us for a bit.  They have a great write-up of the event and the day.  (Photo by Thad Allender.)
